Serious Crimes Met With Serious Response

The United Kingdom recently took the most severe step yet in protecting information. Queen Elizabeth II recently announced the government’s intention to seek life sentences for criminals who commit cyber-crimes of a certain level. These levels include crimes which “result in loss of life, serious illness or injury, or serious damage to national security, or a significant risk thereof.” This level of punishment is currently being hotly debated, as prison sentences typically are, in both the UK and the US. However, one thing is not being contested, and that is the damage that can be done by these criminals who attack us from anywhere in the world, at any time, without ever coming face to face or even setting foot on our property. They steal some of our most vital and prized possessions: our information. And they do it from a padded computer chair. The threat is real, and so our preparation and response must be real as well.
