During Hurricane Sandy, the Montague Tunnel, linking Brooklyn and Lower Manhattan, was destroyed. Flooding and other structural damage rendered the tunnel useless. Until now. Governor Cuomo and members of the New York State government agency, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, became the first official passengers to take a ride on the recently recovered rails. 27 million gallons of water, and 10,000 tons of debris had to be removed from the tunnel for this reconstruction project to get underway. It has taken some time, but public transportation through the Montague Tunnel is set to resume regularly scheduled trips. This is not the last project going on to return the areas impacted by Sandy to the same standard of living they enjoyed before the storm. There are many projects and operations still going on. But that is how emergencies work. It is a cyclical schedule, and the process never really stops. Even when this recovery stage is officially over, preparation stage will begin.
